Group GeneratoR: A Simple Shiny App to Help Teachers Create Class Groups

A friend who works as a middle school teacher recently mentioned that she and several other teachers at her school need an easy way to sort their kids into random groups, while also keeping those groups as balanced as possible on different arbitrary factors (e.g., gender, grade).

I decided to take a stab at helping them out, so I asked for more detailed specifications and then took a few hours last weekend to build a simple web app that I’ve informally dubbed “Group GeneratoR”. The app allows a user to upload a csv file of a class list, define how they would like to group the kids in that list, and then download a modified version of the list with the kids arranged into groups.

The reviews so far have been great, so I wanted to share the app in case any other teachers out there might be able to put it to use. If you’re interested, you can access the app for free at the link below. Happy grouping!
