Demystifying Density Estimation for Designers

Density curves can be excellent tools for conveying information about the distribution of a variable or commodity. However, if you\’re like me before I had the chance to take a data mining course, you may have sketched a density curve into one of your interface concepts without stopping to think about where that curve will come from when your interface is implemented in software.

In this equation-free tutorial, I introduce several of the most common density estimation approaches, discuss the design implications of each approach, and provide an overview of how adjusting the settings of each approach can influence the density curve that users see in your final interface.

This tutorial was my final project for SYS 6018 (Data Mining) at the University of Virginia. Check it out below!
